The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced that it is starting a new Driver Improvement School to give drivers the chance to avoid certain license suspensions and to have points taken off of their license.
Under PENNDOT’s current system of driver consequences, points are issued for certain moving violations. After a driver accumulates six points or is convicted of excessive speeding, the driver is subject to an administrative hearing. With this new program, the hearing administrator now has the option to offer drivers who have accumulated six points for the second time or have been convicted of excessive speeding the opportunity to complete the improvement school instead of sitting for an examination and serving the 15-day license suspension.
PENNDOT noted that the Driver Improvement School is only offered at the department’s discretion and drivers are not able to ask for the option.
